A Fall Wedding.

HE SAID:  Here is another post that isn't RV living, but it was still travelling none the less. Less then two weeks after being home from Australia, we were back on a plane headed to Toronto for Paul and Ronnie's wedding.  We were back with our little travel group of Pat and I with Betty (Pat's mom) and our Grandson Hayden. The four of us have been to Australia and Europe together. It was like old times.
We drove to Calgary and used the Park and Jet to catch our flight.
This was our first time using our Nexus pass and after seeing the long line up for security, having the pass sure made the process go faster.
The flight was great, but it took us a while to get our luggage and out of the airport. Pat got us a "rent-a-wreck" and a wreck it was. Oh well, it was cheap and it was only for a few days.
On our way into the city, we called Paul and Ronnie and met up with them for supper. It was good to see them again.  After supper we left Hayden with them, and headed to our Hotel.

The next day was basically ours to play while Paul and Ronnie continued to get ready for the wedding.  Beth and Patrick were there for the wedding too, so we picked them up along with Hayden to do some sightseeing.

Betty wanted to start the day by visiting her  Aunt Adelaides house just off Dufferin.
We actually found the old house, which is now split up into several apartments.

As we had a late start we drove right into the heart of the city and had lunch at Walbergers. Beth was happy as she was a huge New Kids on the Block fan.

I like eating here, but you can still get better burgers at Burger Priest. From here we walked over to the CN tower where we all bought tickets to go to the top. Pat and I did the tower a few years ago.

I like the views and it was a great day to see long distances. I just don't like the glass floor.

It was fun to look down at Rogers Centre where the Blue Jays were actually playing again working their way toward the world series (they almost made it).

After the tower we went to the Ripley's Aquarium, which is right beside the tower. Pat and

I had never been there before so it was new to us too. It was actually a lot of fun.

We left the heart of downtown in plenty of time to beat the baseball game traffic (the game went into several innings of overtime). We hung out at Beth and Patrick's room until we went to the family supper that Ronnie's sister was hosting. We had a great time meeting Ronnie's side of the family for the first time. Most of them where from the Maritimes.

On our way back to our hotel rooms, Patrick was being so funny. Everyone in the van was laughing so hard. We were in stitches. It was a great end to a fun day.

The next day was the wedding. We went early to help with the decorations and table set ups. Ronnie and Paul had it very well organized, and the set up went quick, even last minute hanging of burlap on the back wall. We were all done by noon. We had time to go to Burger Priest for lunch.
I will say they have the best burgers and fries that I have ever eaten. Next time you are in Toronto you have to try them yourself.

We all went back to our rooms to get dressed for the big event. We had to be there a bit early for pictures.  If I say so myself, we all dressed up pretty good.

The wedding couple were the best dressed by far (See above too)

The ceremony was very simple and touching. The reception followed right after where we were treated to a "food Truck" for our meal. It was a modern way to feed your guests. I loved it.
The couple arranged three different bands to entertain us through the evening. It started off with easy listening and as the night went on, the music got louder and louder. It was awesome though when Paul sang the song he wrote for Ronnie

It was a beautiful wedding. I'm so glad that we got to be a part of it.

The next morning Beth and Patrick had to fly home and we changed hotels to one closer to the airport. We had a lazy Sunday afternoon, and then met up with the wedding party (family) at a Megas Authentic Greek Restaurant in Toronto's Greek district. Delicious Greek food and once again good company.

We stopped at a movie theatre to see the movie The Maritian on the way back to the hotel. Awesome movie.

The next day we took a drive to Orangeville to see Betty's Brother and sister in law Jim and Isabelle Wardlaw. Since Pat and I last saw them in May, they have moved to a retirement condo.
They have a beautiful apartment and their condo building has everything you could ask for. They seem very happy in their new home.

We left them in time so they could get to their lunch and we headed back to Toronto and did some shopping. Today was Thanksgiving and it seemed weird not having a homemade Turkey Dinner. Paul and Ronnie found a great restaurant in the Distillery District where they were serving Turkey.
It was such a nice night out, that we ate out on the patio. Ronnie and her family joined us too. The meal was very tasty, not as good as homemade but we still got TURKEY!!!.

The Toronto Blue Jays won again, and the CN tower was celebrating with lights that looked like UFO's. It was really foggy and very creepy.

CN Tower lights over my head!! They are coming to get me!!!

The next morning we got ready to head home. We had time to do some more shopping and meet up with Ronnie and Paul at another great place for lunch. Right after lunch
h we picked up Hayden and headed toward the airport and to return the car. About 5 minutes on our way, we hear a buzzing in Hayden's suitcase.  We soon found out it was Paul's iPhone that had dropped into Hayden's bag as we were loading the car. We of course had to turn around and return it to Paul. He was very relieved that we found it. We hit a major traffic jam on our way to the airport, and we were rushed getting the car dropped off and getting to the airport on time.  Luckily we got a cab that got us right away.

It was hard to leave the Toronto gang, but we were pushing how much time Hayden was off school and we needed to get him back. As well, we only had a three day break before we were to leave on our next trip.  It was a very memorable and enjoyable Wedding celebration.

SHE SAID:

First, on arrival to Toronto - John mentioned the rent a wreck - I am known for my need to save money on absolutely everything.  I usually succeed in exceeding expectations - low price, great quality - I did not do this with this vehicle.  The van was literally coming apart at the doors, the lights didn't work properly and it made odd noises.  I am not even sure if it was road worthy.  When I tried to call the company to complain, there was never an answer and no voicemail.  It did run for the time needed, so it was a dubious success.   It did give some moments of stress...and laughter.

Beth hasn't been in Toronto since she was on our Florida trip where we just changed planes, so we did the touristy things, as John mentioned.  We had discussed going to Niagara Falls, but as it was a holiday weekend we decided that traffic might have held us up getting back to town for other wedding events.  After getting the van, it was a good idea to stay in town, near tow trucks and public transport.

This short trip to Toronto was one of the highlights of the year.  It was a wonderful time, adding a new member to our family.  Paul and Ronnie had a wedding that reflected who they were.  When they announced their engagement to us last year, they told us they wanted to have a big party...something different - they accomplished this goal, in spades.  It was a lot of fun, and was definitely not a traditional event.   The food was supplied by Food Trucks parked at the entrance to the warehouse where the wedding and reception was held.  Ronnie was beautiful in her silver, sparkling wedding gown - she looked like a 1940's movie star, very breathtaking.  Paul also cleaned up pretty good, himself.  Hayden has grown into a handsome young man.

Seeing family in the Toronto area is another draw to this city.  My cousin Catherine and her friend were able to attend the wedding - it's always a grand time to spend an evening with her.  Catching up is invariably entertaining.  Seeing Uncle Jim and Aunt Isobel, with Mom was also very enjoyable.

Thanksgiving, as John mentioned was different, but fun.  I will correct the menu, however, as we had Turducken for the meal - not turkey.  It is a turkey, stuffed with duck, stuffed with chicken.  Tasty.  We ate with Ronnie's mom and sister who are great people - Paul has joined a great family.

This was a very fast trip - lots of family, food and fun - the very best things in life!

The land down under - 2015

HE SAID: I know this Blog is usually about our travels in our motor home, but this August we made a very long journey to Melbourne Australia to visit with Diana, Josh, Caleb and Riley.  And no (even though many have jokingly asked) we did not take the motorhome with us.

It was a very long trip but we managed to get some sleep. We had a really long layover in Aukland New Zealand, which made waiting to get to Melbourne so much harder. It was awesome to see Diana at the airport.  What was funny was going to her car. Diana couldn't remember where she parked it, so we had quite the laugh dragging all our suit cases around the car park.

Got to see Diana and Josh's new home right away. They haven't been in it long and it is really nice. I especially loved their kitchen with a fantastic gas stove. The first night we got to meet up with Josh, Caleb and Riley.

Our first week there, we did our best adjusting to the time difference and learning to drive again on the "other" side of the road.  Caleb was just staring to film a commercial for the Spirit of Tasmania ( a ferry that takes you across to Tasmania from Melbourne.
Caleb played the son of a young family taking a journey on the ferry. It was really interesting watching the process of creating a 30 second commercial. So much attention to detail.

We soon got into a routine with Diana and Josh working during the day.  I became the resident cook and chauffeur. Pat did the cleaning.  I love to cook and their kitchen was so organized and easy to use - it made cooking a breeze. Just had some issues finding the same ingredients you normally have in North America.
In order for Pat and I to have one of the two cars, we took Toot and Josh to work and the kids to school. It gave me lots of Oz driving experience.

We also used the days to take day trips around Melbourne.
Here are some of the places we visited.

Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park

We visited this spot in our last visit, and loved it so much that we wanted to go back again. It is located in the Mornington Peninsula.  What a great place to really get close up to the Oz'y animals, especially the Koala Bear,  and Wallabies.

    William Ricketts Sanctuary

Way up in the Dandenong Ranges, is this beautiful park full of original aboriginal rock statues done by William Ricketts. Really worth the trip.

      City Sightseeing Melbourne

We used a Groupon ticket and did a Hop on Hop off tour of the city of Melbourne. We have used this way of visiting a new city many times. We lucked out and had a nice clear day, but unfortunately it was colder then we thought it would be.Got to see lots of the city that we haven't explored yet.

      Queen Victoria Market

This is one of my favourite places in Melbourne. It is an outdoor market, full of so many cool things. We always buy our souvenirs here. We actually went to the market twice this trip. First time we took Riley with us. He was great company never complaining once.

        National Rhododendron Gardens

I was really reluctant to go to a "flower" garden, but I am so glad we did. The scenery was really breathtaking. The picture above looks like a post card, but was taken by my iPhone. And we were here in Winter. I will definitely go back if we ever get to Oz in their summer.

        Como House
Towards the end of our time in Australia, we started visiting historic mansions right in the city. While we couldn't get inside this house, the gardens were amazing.

        Rippon Lea Estate

We actually got to tour this estate. It has been a back drop in the Miss Fisher's Murder Mystery series (which can be seen on Netflix..). When we toured the house, it was full of items from the series which was cool.

The gardens here too were amazing.

      Safety Beach

On our last trip to Oz, our time share was located near this beach. We went back and unlike the last time at this beach, the water was clear and calm. Loved it.

      Melbourne Zoo

On our last trip to Oz, we didn't have time to check out their zoo. On our last full day in Melbourne, with Diana, we did make it there and it was well worth the visit. It was one of the better zoo's we have seen.

      ____________________________________________________________________

We decided to give Josh and Diana a few weeks off from our company.  While we have been to the Sydney Airport, I have always wanted to visit that city. We were able to make it happen and thanks to it being off season, we were able to get train fare for $50 AUD each from Melbourne to Sydney. It was cheap but wow it was a long train ride. It takes about 12 hours on the train to get there. Got to see some beautiful scenery.

We manage to get a hotel next to Darling Harbour which is basically in the downtown area.

We decided the best way to see the city without having to rent a car was to use the Hop on Hop off bus. The tours they give you in Sydney were well worth the money.
Here is a collage of that tour:

The next day, we used Uber for the first time and toured the Sydney Market. Almost as nice as Melbourne.  We got some really good deals though. Next we got a ride to the Sydney Opera house and famous bridge.

It was as beautiful as all the pictures I have seen over the years. I wanted to go to the top of the bridge, but it was way too expensive, so had to settle for just views.  We even took the ferry back to Darling Harbour where our hotel was.
We were hoping to get together with Bev and Julie who were on our Panama cruise. Both live near Sydney, but our timing didn't work out with booked surgeries etc. I loved Sydney and was sad to leave.

      ++++++++

The other week we left Melbourne was a trip to Numurkah. This is a small town located about two hours north of Melbourne in the Goulburn Valley. Why there? Well, we were able to get a time share for a week with really cheap points. It was a three bedroom town house that had way more room then we needed.  Josh and Diana joined us our first weekend there.
The first full day together we went to a cactus farm and a place called the Big Strawberry
It was a great place to have lunch.

Josh also took us 4X4 ing in the country which was scary and fun at the same time. The following day we explored more of the country - this time seeing a farmers market. Toot and Josh treated us to a nice Chinese Massage in a local mall.  After an early supper they headed back to Melbourne, leaving that big three bedroom place all to our self.

The next three days we spent exploring the agricultural side of Australia, visiting a dairy farm (where we got some amazing cheese), an olive farm, a sheep farm and a historic homestead.  We also found a "fauna Park" which was a really small zoo, but was still entertaining. We decided to drive to Bendigo which was about a two hour drive. It look interesting and it was well worth the trip.

This city was an old mining town but still a very active and busy city (home to Bendigo Bank). They have one of the oldest pottery factories in the country and they still hand make all their pottery. I wanted to buy a nice tea pot but couldn't figure out to get it home. They also salvaged the tram in the city and made it a talking tram for the tourists. It was different.

      ___________________________________________

The weekends were the best as we were able to spend our time with Josh, Diana and sometimes Caleb and Riley. We never wasted one of them. Here were some of our highlights.

      Healesville Sanctuary

This was a nice small zoo just outside of Melbourne near the mountain range. It was nice as Josh and Toot had never been there before. It was great to see the Oz animals on our first weekend there.
On our way home we went to the Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery.  I never seen so many chocolates in one place

      So yummy!!!

        Mount Lofty Park

One of our goals was to see wild kangaroo like we did our first visit. Josh and Toot found us a great place that was nearby. But we had to hike quite a hill. It was a beautiful day so I was all for it.

        Kangaroos enjoying the sunny afternoon

We were able to do a session with Diana and Josh. It is nice smaller temple, but still very beautiful. We also did another trip later in September with Caleb to do some Baptisms.

Later that afternoon we went to a Gold Class Movie theatre and saw Man From Uncle. Gold class is the only way to see a movie.

        Cuckoo Restaurant
We had a goal to do a nice high Tea. (very popular in Australia). We found this place again in the Dandenong Range hills. A beautiful place - it looked so much like a German Gasthaus. Great food, but it certainly wasn't high tea. Lots of great German food though.

After tea we drove over to
Grants on Sherbrooke   where we feed the cockatoos.  We did this our last trip with Noni and Hayden. We loved it so much we wanted to do it again.

      Diana's birthday and Lion King

One of the nice things about extending our original stay of four weeks to six, was to be in Australia for Diana's Birthday on the 17th of September.  We haven't been with her on her birthday for a long time so we made sure we had a good time. We bought tickets for all of us to see the Lion King in Melbourne. All of us had seen it before, but we loved it so much we wanted to go again. It was well done. I just had to adjust to the Aussie accents with the actors. We finished the night after the play at one of my favourite Chocolate places in the city called
        Koko Black Collins St ....
best place in the city to get hot chocolate and all things chocolate!!!

      Melbourne Cricket Ground

On my bucket list this trip was to see an Oz'y rules Football game.  Fortunately good friends Kean and Megan were season ticket holders for the Collingwood team games, and they were able to get Josh, Caleb, Riley and myself great tickets. It was my first "footy game". It was awesome having Kean sitting beside me explaining how the game works. It is kind of like an American Football game mixed with soccer and Rugby. I found the game moved really fast and it was very exciting. Even better, the Collingwood team won. I became a big fan of the game.

      Oz'y Grandkids

It was really nice spending time with Caleb and Riley during the six weeks They loved my cooking and I enjoyed the alone time I got with them every morning during our school runs. I also enjoyed HIGH/LOWs at supper time, where we all had to tell of one High and One low that happened during the day.

I was sad to leave after the six weeks. It went so fast and I didn't want to go back home. I love Australia and I love spending time with the Oz'y crew.  I can't wait to go back again.

      SHE SAID:

John has done a great job covering our trip.  I will add a few thoughts and how we got so some of the places we went to.

Since travelling so much (and before, I know, as does anyone who has spent any time with me) I try to do things on the cheap...really cheap!  That way we can do more.  I scour sites like Groupon, TripAdvisor and any local on line coupon site I can find.  By doing this we found some interesting and beauatiful things near Melbourne and Sidney.  During this trip I also started to write reviews on Trip Advisor.  I got an email last week saying over 1500 people have read my reviews and one of them has been voted a 'top' entry.  Now, to find a way to get paid to do that.

Anyway, as a result of my searching we found William Ricketts Sanctuary and the Rhododendrum gardens.  Both were very beautiful and well worth the time and effort to get to them.  I know John was questioning my sanity as I was giving him the days itinerary for these, however they were both time well spent.

The trips to the historical homes was from recommendations by a chiropractor I became quite close to, he was a history buff, I love history, so those places hit the list of things to do while we were in town.

My stupid sciatica really started to act up.  I walked ten steps, feet the pain, sit, mutter, stretch walk a few more steps and repeat.  John wasn't really appreciating my approach to sightseeing but it was better than nothing.  I finally decided that a chiropractor may help - went a few times - didn't really fix anything, but he was a really nice guy!

My personal favourite time in Australia was the time spent with Diana, Josh, Caleb and Riley.  Three years really is too long.  Seeing them makes me miss them more!  Life there certainly fell into a routine for us, and time went way too quickly.  The flights are long, but the payoff certainly outweighs that!

The morning of our departure back to Canada
